Celebrating the Georgia lifestyle

Our winners from November 2014 are Savannah Jacobs, of Canton, who took the photo, and Deborah Clark, of Woodstock, who correctly
guessed that it is a memorial to Bob the Turkey, a beloved figure in downtown Woodstock until he was struck by a vehicle in 2012. Many readers
guessed this one correctly, telling stories of how Bob used to survey the
passing traffic and occasionally chase police cars. The sculpture was created by local artist Bruce Weinzetl.

The results of the 1876 presidential election were disputed in three
Southern states and Oregon. Congress
appointed an electoral commission to
resolve the dispute. Republicans on
the commission promised Democrats
they would end Reconstruction if
Democrats agreed to make Rutherford
B. Hayes president. The commission
awarded the disputed electoral votes
to Hayes, who received 185 electoral
votes to Samuel J. Tilden's 184. Hayes
became president and ended Reconstruction. White politicians regained
control in the South, and rights guaranteed to black citizens in the Constitution were denied.
This failure to defend the rights of
black Americans set the stage for further violations. Most notable was the
landmark Supreme Court ruling Plessy
v. Ferguson (1896), which established
the doctrine of "separate but equal"
accommodations for blacks and
whites. The court said there was no
violation of equal protection rights or
liberty, as guaranteed by the 14th
Amendment. The court upheld a Louisiana statute requiring railway companies "to provide equal, but separate,
accommodations for the white and
colored races, by providing two or
more passenger coaches for each
passenger train, or by dividing the
passenger coaches by a partition so as
to secure separate accommodations."
This opinion stood for more than
50 years.
Justice John Marshall Harlan disagreed with the other justices and
wrote a dissent, which reads, in part,
"... in view of the Constitution, in the
eye of the law, there is in this country
no superior, dominant, ruling class of
citizens. ... Our Constitution is colorblind, and neither knows nor tolerates
classes among citizens. In respect of
civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law. The humblest is the peer
of the most powerful. The law regards
man as man, and takes no account of
his surroundings or of his color when
his civil rights as guaranteed by the
supreme law of the land are involved."
