Making an impact
Thank you so much for publishing an article on radon in GEORGIA
Magazine. [See Georgia News,
"Checking radon levels in your home
can save lives," January 2017, page 8;
bit.ly/janradn.] The article really
boosted our radon kit [requests] this
year.
We distributed 413 kits in January, and the magazine was listed as
the referral source 195 times. In past
years our kit [requests] in January
have been closer to 200, so the magazine doubled our impact.

December's Travel Guide winner
Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a $200 Walmart gift
card in the mail from your magazine.
It arrived one day before my birthday. Thank you so much. I used it for
some needed items, and I did treat
myself a little to something special,
too.
I love your magazine, and I read
it every month. The articles are informative, and the recipes that I have
baked and cooked have been a delight to share with my family and
church friends. Keep doing what you
do best.

SE
The United States is a diverse
nation, with no common ethnic or
religious affiliation that identifies
one as "American." Instead, what
binds us together as a country is a
shared civic identity. And for well
over a century, sports have helped
us forge that identity, reflecting the
trials and triumphs of the American
experience.
Our own state is no exception.
From sandlot games to organized
leagues, millions of Georgians are
involved with sports-either on
the field or in the stands. In times
of social or political turmoil, sports
bring us together and give us an
opportunity to be part of something larger than ourselves.
For all of these reasons, we're
pleased to bring you this, our first
sports-themed issue. In it, we take
a look at a baseball legend with
deep roots in our state: Ty Cobb.
See "Restoring Ty Cobb's legacy,"
starting on page 16, to learn how
a recent book is rehabilitating The
Georgia Peach's image.
Next, we visit a current baseball celebrity: Timothy Miller, the
Atlanta Braves' seventh-inning singing star and Atlanta Opera tenor.
Baseball and opera might not seem
to have much in common, but
read "It's Miller time" on page 20
to find out how Miller brings them
together.
Finally, on page 24 we focus
on a program administered by 4-H,
one of Georgia's longest-standing
youth organizations. The 4-H motto
is "learn by doing," and Project
S.A.F.E. (for Shooting Awareness,
Fun and Education) uses shooting
sports to teach the importance of
safety, sportsmanship and ethical
behavior.
