These 1888 Mills towels produced in Griffin are made from either
Southern-grown cotton or cotton from the company's Africa project.

Toweling off
A group of folks who worked for Dundee Mills,
founded in 1888 in Griffin, started 1888 Mills in 1987.
The 200-employee operation makes towels, using
100 percent Sweet South Cotton, all grown in the South.
The thick, soft towels-sold at Walmart and Bed, Bath &
Beyond and in their online stores-prominently feature
their Georgia provenance on product tags. Lexi Schladenhauffen, senior vice president of marketing and design,
says: "We are essentially the last remaining U.S. towel
manufacturer, but we never left the U.S. when all the
big mills started closing down. In fact, we expanded and
moved into a larger facility in Griffin about three years
ago." 1888 Mills also partners with the Austria-based Aid
by Trade foundation to support cotton-growing in Africa
for U.S.-made products. "What we loved about it is it's
not charity at all. We're able to increase farmland, crops,
wages in general in those communities, build schools
[and enhance] general prosperity." Walmart sells Africancotton towels online, while Bed, Bath & Beyond offers
the towels made from Southern-grown cotton. Price:

Are your youngsters interested in golf? It's expensive
to buy new, larger clubs for them as they grow, but
