Playful pansies and violas

suffer with a drab, dreary garden! Add cheerful color to garden
beds, containers, hanging baskets
and window boxes with pansies and
their miniature cousins, violas. These
playful annuals come in many colors,
including pale pastels and vibrant
reds, yellows and purples.
Pansies have large, showy
blooms, while violas have small but
more profuse blooms. Plant both

varieties now in full to partial sun for color that will last
through winter into early spring.
Try 'Cool Wave' pansies for a
spreading variety that looks fantastic
in hanging baskets. 'Cool Wave' pansies grow quickly with many blooms.
Charming 'Whiskers' pansies have
dark striations that look like animal
whiskers radiating out from the center of the flower.
To keep pansies and violas looking great all season long, keep them
consistently watered and fertilize
every three to four weeks. Remove
spent flowers to encourage new
blooms. If the plants get "leggy" or
straggly, cut them back to stimulate
new growth.
Accent your pansies and violas
with fall foliage plants, such as heuchera, dusty miller and ornamental
varieties of cabbage, kale and peppers. Add in other cool-weather flowers, such as mums, snapdragons and
cyclamen. And when you're ready to
plant, plan ahead for a plethora of
spring blooms by planting bulbs like
