with a laugh. "At the time, I didn't have a job, so I was
available."
Ziegler also used the opportunity to share some of
the support he received at the Salvation Army. "Sometimes I found myself ministering to people who came up
and told me about their lives," he says. "I found myself
talking to a lot of people. Even if someone just passed
by, I'd say, 'God bless you' or 'Merry Christmas!'"
At first, Ziegler found himself ringing the bell at
different locations, but eventually he was assigned to a
Savannah Kroger, where he became a fixture of the
season.
"I finally got to be in a place long enough so a lot of
people knew me," he says. "I was there eight or nine
hours a day from Thanksgiving until Christmas."
Ziegler is now a member of the Salvation Army's
advisory board. He has a full-time job that keeps him
from collecting, but he's recruited his wife to pick up
where he left off.
