Welcome 2018 at Georgia's versions of Times Square

ew York City's Times Square may
have set the benchmark for a festive way to ring in the new year,
attracting crowds of people who
gather in the cold and millions more
who watch from the warmth of their
living rooms.
If the idea of partying in public holds some appeal, don't rush to
book a northbound flight. Around
the state, several municipalities have
taken the New York concept and put
their own local spins on it.
Ready to watch a buzzard, possum or sprig of edelweiss plunge
into 2018? Here are a few of Georgia's places to experience such thrills
firsthand.
Dublin's Shamrock Drop is preceded by a street party with music, food and activities for
children. Theatre Dublin also shows free movies in the hours leading up to midnight.

The Alpine-inspired city of Helen, nestled in the North Georgia
mountains, marks the calendar's turn
with a family-friendly event both in-
side and outside of the town's festival
hall.
For the fifth straight year, the fun
will start at 8 p.m., when partygoers can dance, fill up on heavy hors
d'oeuvres and raise a glass to the old
year. A few minutes before midnight,
the focus shifts outside, where a 50foot flagpole holds a wreath of edelweiss that descends as the clock ticks
off the year's final seconds. Welcome
the new year with a Champagne toast
(or juice for the kids).
Admission is $20 per person, $35
per couple and half-price for children
ages 6 to 12. Those younger than 6
are free.

top of the five-story Roberts Building
next to Theatre Dublin on Academy
Avenue.
"It's put together by Oconee Technical College, and we use a crane to
mount it on a pole," explains Rebecca
McWilliam of the city's visitors center.
"At midnight, they drop the shamrock,
and it's really neat to see."
This is the third year that Dublin
has hosted an official New Year's Eve
party, McWilliam adds. "People used
to gather downtown to watch a giant
clock on the side of a bank building,
and we just developed the idea off
that history."
The highlight of the night is preceded by a street party that kicks off
at 8:30 p.m. in the downtown district
with music, food and kids' activities.
The theater is open with free movies running until just before midnight.
Admission is free.
