System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia-involved in the initiative, students like
Tolbert may find it easier to locate a
program that works for them. More
than 50 institutions statewide offer
30 programs, including certificates,
diplomas and degrees.

Future of work

By 2025, more than 60 percent
of the jobs in Georgia will require a
college degree, yet only 42 percent
of Georgians meet that mark, the
governor's office reports. The same
numbers are true at the national
level, according to the Indianapolisbased Lumina Foundation, the
nation's largest private foundation
that focuses on higher education opportunities for Americans. Their goal
is to help 16.4 million Americans
pursue more education by 2025 to
meet that 60 percent mark.
In Georgia, many colleges and
universities have created offices
specifically focused on adult learners
to help answer questions about how
to enroll, participate in college life
and maintain balance with home life.
At the University of North Georgia
(UNG) in Dahlonega, for example,
the Veteran and Adult Learner
Programs (VALP) team provides a
"concierge-type service" to guide
new students to the correct departments and develop programs to fit
their lives.
"Coming back to college or starting college later in life is stressful

enough on its own," says Christy Orr,
assistant director of UNG's VALP. "To
know you have a department and
a friendly face dedicated to helping you through your educational
process can alleviate some of that
stress."
Students often return to college
to move up in their jobs, change
careers or fulfill dreams. Many times,
these working professionals have 20
years of experience in the field but
watch younger or newer co-workers
get promotions or positions that
open in the company.
"They bring in all this valuable
experience but have to start at the
beginning," Orr says. "Some of the
classes they could teach themselves,
just from their own work experience."
That's why VALP and similar
programs statewide help adult learners earn credit for courses in which
they have knowledge or life experience. The Prior Learning Assessment
(PLA) and standardized tests such as
the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), Manufacturing Skills Standard Council (MSSC)
and National Career Readiness
Certificate (NCRC) allow students to
"test out" of a course and earn credit
hours by passing exams.
Georgia also developed the
Transfer and Articulation Tool (GATRACS), which allows potential students to learn about transfer policies
and figure out how their alreadyMore online at www.georgiamagazine.org

Richard Ward talks about areas in which he and other adult learners are struggling and

"Our adult students see this as a
time to focus on what they need for
themselves again," Orr says. "In return, this always ends with a positive
effect for their family."

Future of you

Ronald Skrine, the administrative
battalion chief of the Valdosta Fire
Department, is one of those students.
He started a business degree at VSU
in 1993 and married his college
sweetheart. To support her through
college, he dropped out to work as
she completed a teaching degree.
They had three kids, and Skrine
started his career at the Fire Department in 2000. But he always wanted
to go back. He decided to enroll in
VSU's organizational leadership program, which would be useful at the
Fire Department and elsewhere if he
changed careers.
He enjoyed the flexibility of an
online program, which allowed him
to work a normal schedule at the
Fire Department, which often requires several days on call and then
several days off. During his off days,
Skrine could concentrate more on his
schoolwork and complete lessons.
"It was perfect for me, and the
professors really knew how to deal
with nontraditional students," he
says. "If we ran into problems online,
as long as we were open and honest,
