Relive the Revolution

uskets will blast across the fields when re-enactors commemorate the historic
Battle of Kettle Creek in Wilkes County Feb. 9-11. Revolutionary Days takes
visitors back to the United States' fight for independence. It begins with a Friday
night dinner at the Pope Center in Washington. On Saturday, a ceremony, parade
and re-enactment take place near and around the courthouse in Washington, where
you can also see 30 living-history displays. Saturday afternoon, ceremonies and
pageantry will take place at the Kettle Creek Battlefield, about 12 miles southwest
of Washington. A ceremony honoring Wilkes County and South Carolina militias
in the battle will be held on Sunday at Philips Mill Baptist Church, not far from the
battlefield.
The battle in February 1779 was fought at the Kettle Creek Battlefield. Nearly
400 patriot soldiers defeated some 800 British loyalists, who had just captured Savannah. The revolutionaries surprised the British and won decisively in less than
two hours.
The three-day event recognizes the importance of the battle at the site, which is
now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
