of them students on field trips with
their schools from throughout the
state.
Oddly, though, "we noticed that
not many local kids were coming to
the museum," Ambrose says.
So they took the museum to
them.
Traveling exhibits, taken to the
local schools, give students an opportunity to view and respond to information about pioneers in myriad

fields, including Macon's own John
Killen, a writer and educator.
The museum also hosts on-site,
after-school programs that provide
students with instruction in visual
and performing arts that they may
not experience in school.
"This was imperative to us having an impact on local education,"
Ambrose says.

opportunities, it also offers in-depth
traditional exhibits. Many of these
feature the stories of regional legends, such as musicians Otis Redding
and Little Richard, who garnered national appeal.

A display of tradition
"This year, we're hoping, in
partnership with the Otis Redding
Foundation, to bring back a large
photography exhibit. On the 75th anniversary of Redding's birth [in 2016],
we were able to do this original photography exhibit, and it had a lot of
original photographs that all belong
to his widow, many of which hadn't
been seen before," Ambrose says.
"What we intend to do in that gallery is to do an exhibit that will focus on the rise in the 1950s and '60s
of African-American musicians and
entrepreneurs, centered around Otis
Redding, Little Richard and James
Brown, each of whom performed in
Macon often.
"These are important stories that
need to be told. They're important
stories that people need to be aware
of, but there are connections that go
well beyond cultural and ethnic and
racial boundaries. This is a story we
share."
