* Homes sweet homes: In conjunction
with Tucker-based Green Power Electric
Membership Corp. (EMC), Hart EMC in
Hartwell celebrated
Earth Day in April by
installing birdhouses at several
local schools: South
Hart Elementary
in Hartwell, North
Hart Elementary in
Bowersville, Franklin
County Middle School in Carnesville,
Carnesville Elementary School in Carnesville, Stephens County Middle School in
Toccoa and Liberty Elementary School in
Canton.
* Weather watchers: Lee County Middle
School East in Leesburg used a $4,999
grant from Americus-based Sumter EMC
to buy a WeatherSTEM weather station
and camera, which will help sixthgraders in the school's STEM (science,
technology, engineering and mathematics) program learn about weather and

* Dramatic rescue: Workers from
Covington-based Snapping Shoals EMC
came to the rescue when downed power
lines trapped a bus carrying Rockdale
County students on March 12. High winds
felled a tree, which took down power
lines that landed on the school bus. Rockdale County Fire Rescue credited the
co-op for its quick response in shutting
off the power and clearing the lines and
tree out of the way. No one was injured.
* School boosters: Planters EMC in Millen distributed $45,000 in scholarships to
students from Burke County High School
in Waynesboro, Edmund Burke Academy
in Waynesboro, Jenkins County High
School in Millen and Screven County
High School in Sylvania on April 24. In
addition to the 42 $1,000 scholarships
awarded, the EMC gave $1,000 scholarships to the three local students who
participated in the Washington Youth
Tour leadership program last year.

North Georgia EMC honors budding artists

"The annual contest is a fun way to connect with students throughout
our service area, giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents as they
learn more about the cooperative's mission to provide 'power with purpose,'"
says Laura Sparks, communications coordinator for North Georgia EMC. "We
are always impressed with the artwork and creativity."
Students received $50 for first
place and $25 for second and third
place in each category. Their artwork
will be displayed at the North Georgia EMC annual meeting at the Dalton Convention Center on Aug. 2.
