Peep, peep!
Pet chickens give eggs,
plenty of love

uches resident Lisa Arbour is a proud owner of
pet chickens, even though she wasn't too enthusiastic when her husband, Willard, first suggested
getting them.
"Now I can't imagine not having them," Arbour
says. "Willard's family had a rooster when he was growing up in the Northlake area of [metro] Atlanta, and
we decided to get some [chickens] when we moved to
Suches in North Georgia. I hit the ground running, and
now they're definitely mine.
"Being with them is therapeutic. I like to sit and
watch them; they are so interesting. They make soft
sounds and can be very soothing to be around. They
come to the sound of my voice. I even read on Facebook that some people are taking chickens into nursing
homes for residents to interact with."
Each of her nine chickens is named and has a
distinct personality.

characters from the TV show 'Justified,' an FX program

When baby chicks arrive in their new home, they need plenty of food
and water. As a safety precaution, put marbles in the water dish so
that if the chicks fall in, they will be able to get back out.

Lisa Arbour's 7-year-old granddaughter, Iliana Morales, often
spends time with the chickens.
Raylan," she says. "I just love that show, and although
most of its characters are male, I've given my hens
female derivations of their names: Raylene, for the main
character; Justine, for the name of the show; and Boydelle, for one of the other characters."
She has a variety of breeds-some selected because
of their reputation for being good egg-layers and others
because they are unusual. Her Rhode Island Red and
Golden Comet both lay brown eggs; her Black Copper Maran lays chocolate-colored eggs. She even has an
Easter Egger hen who lays blue eggs.
The flock lives in an 8-by-10-foot chicken house in
a fenced, 50-by-50-foot chicken yard. Arbour calls it the
Henitentiary, but she says that her husband has dubbed
it the Taj Mahal of chicken houses. It's surrounded by a
5-foot fence and has 2 feet of hardware cloth along the
bottom. It also has netting across the top.
"Predators can be a real problem," she says. "We've
seen bears, hawks, owls, opossums and raccoons try to
get to the hens."
