The business of
pet chickens

Having chickens as pets has
become so popular that all kinds of
related businesses are springing up
around the country. Traci Torres of
Monroe, Conn., started mypetchick
en.com more than a decade ago.
"I got interested in chickens in
third grade when we did an incubation experiment, and so I just always
wanted chickens of my own," she
says. "When we moved into our
first house, we got chickens, and
soon my hobby had grown into a
business."
People who have pet chickens
have coined a phrase, "chicken
math," to describe how someone can
go from owning a half-dozen chicks
to raising a whole flock.
"Chickens don't need a rooster
to lay [unfertilized] eggs, though
somehow people with chickens just
keep [buying] more chicks," Torres

Milton resident Laura Monette wanted to have fresh
eggs, but she was also interested in raising a few unusual types of chickens.
"We do a lot of gardening, growing our own food,
so in some ways we wanted to kind of live off the grid,"
says Monette, who lives on 6 acres. "I started with six
and now have 14; we always have plenty of eggs."
She purchased a few good egg-layers and some
boutique breeds, including a Lavender Orpington and a
Cream Legbar.
"All of them follow me around when I'm outdoors.
They seem to know when I have treats," she says. "I've
found out that having pet chickens can become an obsession. My Pinterest boards are ridiculous."
