baseball accessible to all

rom the time she was a teen, Blackshear resident Ashton Riggins, now 32, longed to play
baseball, but her diagnosis of autism held her back.
A first try at creating a local special-needs baseball
team in the area 15 years ago dissolved several years
later when the couple running it moved out of state.
Still her dream persisted.
In 2015, a group of adults in Pierce County and
the surrounding area made the commitment to bring
The Miracle League to Blackshear (in Pierce County)
as well as Waycross and adjacent counties, including
Ware County. Ashton's mom, Kathy Riggins, was at
the head of the line to raise money and solicit sponsorships for The Miracle League of the Okefenokee.
"We did things differently this time, contacting The Miracle League [national] headquarters in
Conyers for guidance," says Riggins,
who recently became president of The
Miracle League of the Okefenokee.
"We applied for and received our
nonprofit 501(c)(3) status and started
speaking to civic groups about The
Miracle League and its benefits to
the community and our citizens."
The organization now has
the support of the Ware County
Commission, and funding for the
specially built field is part of an
upcoming SPLOST (specialpurpose local-option sales tax)
vote this year.
