North Georgia EMC supports state's farmers

orth Georgia Electric Membership Corp. (EMC)
in Dalton is supporting an effort by state Rep.
Kasey Carpenter (R-Dalton), who also owns the
local Oakwood Cafe, to help the state's farmers bring
their produce to buyers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The effort is a collaboration among the cafe; North
Georgia EMC and other local partner organizations; and
the Georgia Department of Agriculture and its Georgia
Grown program, which promotes locally grown produce.
Carpenter and his team are buying produce from Georgia
farmers, repackaging the food into family-sized boxes
and selling each box for $20.
Carpenter traveled to farms statewide to collect
the produce. He gathered 310,000 pounds of produce-
enough to fill nine tractor-trailers-for
the first event at Dalton State College
and other distribution points on May 20.
Long lines of cars assembled to purchase the 20,000 boxes.
Farmers have struggled because of
disruptions in the food supply chain. For
example, restaurants that usually would
buy much of the produce were closed or
operating at reduced levels.
North Georgia EMC's 220 employees preordered 350 boxes, and the
cooperative's corporate services team
distributed the boxes to employees at its
district offices.

Mike Fromm, chief human resources officer of Shaw
Industries, carries a box of Georgia Grown produce to
a buyer. Shaw Industries was one of the distribution
points in Dalton.

in Reynolds-based
Flint Energies' Rural
Murals program debuted in
the city of Roberta in May.
A $12,500 grant to Keep
Roberta-Crawford County
Beautiful funded the mural,
which artist Chris Johnson
of Columbus painted on a
building at 50 E. Agency St.
The 680-square-foot mural,
which depicts the county's
history, was dedicated in
memory of Billy J. Bassett, a
local artist and art lover who
always wanted a mural to be
installed in Roberta.
