During World War II, the station's crews helped rescue survivors of the
SS Oklahoma and Esso Baton Rouge, two American tankers torpedoed
by a German submarine off the island's coast in 1942.
The U.S. Coast Guard Station is operated by the Coastal Georgia
Historical Society as the World War II Home Front Museum.

North Beach and South Beach, Tybee Island
Once frequented by pirates, Tybee Island is now frequented by tourists. During the 18th century, pirates used Tybee and other barrier islands
along Georgia's coast as a safe refuge and a place to hide treasure.
Today, Tybee's beach is a popular vacation spot for water sports such
as swimming, kayaking and riding personal watercraft, and visitors also
explore the island's boutiques, art galleries and souvenir shops. Attractions include the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum on North Beach,
and on South Beach the Tybee Beach Pier and Pavilion hosts festivals and
events throughout the year. The pier is also a popular spot for fishing.

They are home to many birds, animals and insects
and are composed of trees and plants that are
capable of tolerating strong winds, salt spray and
sandy soil. Maritime forests are a stabilizing force for
