The civil rights movement through children's books

icture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement
through Children's Books at the High Museum of Art in
Atlanta explores the events, people and themes of the movement
through nearly 80 pieces of art, including paintings, prints,
collages and drawings.
Picture the Dream captures key moments, including Rosa
Parks' refusal to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery,
Ala., bus in 1955, and when four African American students at a
Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., in1960 solidified
the sit-in movement. Using children's books, the exhibit emphasizes the role of children as activists and includes the stories of
Parks, Ambassador Andrew Young, U.S. Rep. John Lewis and
Martin Luther King Jr.
The exhibition is a collaboration with the Eric Carle Museum
of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass.
