The American black bear averages 3 feet tall when
standing on all four feet. Males can weigh as much as
600 pounds, and females can reach 300 pounds.
kangaroos are a big draw, Chehaw also maintains a
wide variety of other mammals, waterfowl, reptiles
and amphibians. The alligator habitat in the swamp
boardwalk, one of the zoo's most popular areas,
features a chance to participate in a feeding.
Meerkats are known for their "sentry"
system, in which one or more
meerkats keep watch while the
rest sleep or look for food.

The cheetah sometimes is referred to as the "greyhound of
the cats." The fastest of the land animals, cheetahs can reach
speeds of 70 mph.

heetahs, zebras and meerkats-
oh, my. Albany's Chehaw Park
& Zoo is truly a wild kingdom of
exotic animals, thanks in part to the late
Jim Fowler. The Albany native, best known as
Marlon Perkins' sidekick on television's "Wild
Kingdom," brought animals from around the
world to augment the zoo's residents.
"With nearly 250 residents that represent
almost 75 animal species, Chehaw Park & Zoo gives
visitors a distinct look at many exotic animals from
around the globe in their natural habitats," says
Morgan Burnette, director of Chehaw Park & Zoo.
"Our African Veldt tour takes visitors on a mobilized ride through a replica of the open grasslands
similar to those in South Africa. They'll see zebras,
wildebeests, a few species of antelope and ostriches
grazing side by side under scrub trees."

wolves, Bactrian camels, colobus monkeys and red
