need more meat in their freezers for families facing
food insecurity. "
The program also offers an opportunity for
landowners to manage deer populations. Without
ongoing population control, the state's deer
population can soar, which is problematic for
several reasons, including the overall health of the
resident deer.
Hunters for the Hungry enables property
owners to shoot nuisance deer during the hunting
season and ensure that the excess meat is put to
good use. Copeland describes it as a " win-win " for
the property owners and the organizations seeking
food donations.
" These [land owners] have properties they work
hard to maintain, but they have biologists who come
in and tell them how many deer they need to take off
the property, " he says. " Most people can't
consume that many deer, so it gives the
hunters another avenue to manage their
property the way they need to. At the same
time, we're able to help out those who are
in need. "
Given the economic challenges stemming from
the pandemic, Schiavone says he expects there to
be strong interest in the program this year, and food
banks across Georgia have reported increased need
for food donations.
Schiavone says donations are down slightly for
2020 so far, and Copeland says he anticipates that
some hunters might store more meat for themselves,
given the current economic uncertainty.
