Memories from school days
In your September issue of Georgia Magazine, I enjoyed reading the My Georgia
article. [See " Excerpts from a 1947-48 third grader's diary, " page 12; bit.ly/3gdiary.]
After reading it, I pulled out the
notebook my Mamina, who
passed away 23 years ago, had
saved as one of her treasures. It is
my brother's third grade English
class notebook from 1972-73.
Frankie was the only one of
the four siblings who got to be
her student in school! Who knew
back then that our mother, an
English teacher in Puerto Rico,
was going to have all four of her kids living in the U.S. as adults and using the language
she taught? Thanks for this treat!

Harold Dean Middlebrooks sees it and laughs at the March 31 entry: " Harold Dean

I just wanted to send a quick thank you for a
great magazine. We bought a house in Young HarS
ris in 2019 in preparation for my husband's retirement and us being able to live there full time.
I look forward to receiving your magazine and
reading it and learning interesting tidbits about
Georgia. I always learn something new from every
issue.
In November's issue I liked learning about
different Georgia businesses, since I like to do my
part in helping them during this wacky time. [See

Atlanta artist Lyn Cosby uses recycled, felted-wool
sweaters to create her imaginative birds for Lyn's Wrens. She
finds the sweaters at thrift shops and yard sales, then washes
them in very hot water until they turn into felt. Cosby does everything by hand: cutting the patterns and felt pieces, embroidering
and stitching. The crafty birds are ideal for tree ornaments or even
a year-round decoration, set in a window. In addition to cardinals,
chickadees, bluebirds, cedar waxwings and hummingbirds, she
crafts other critters, such as squirrels and chipmunks. Price: $19.

HEAT AND SWEET

Scotch bonnet pepper trees imported from
Jamaica are the source of the heat in delicious
jellies from Grump's Pepper Jelly. The Moultrie-based
company offers flavored pepper jellies alongside mild,
medium and hot versions of its original pepper jelly.
The medium-heat variety should pass muster with
anyone, whether dabbed on cream cheese and a
cracker or slathered on a roasted pork tenderloin. The
cranberry pepper jelly makes a nice embellishment for
a roasted turkey sandwich or a turkey breast. Flavors
include cranberry, blueberry, pineapple, wine and

Hanging a wreath on a door or wall
is almost as essential for celebrating the
holiday season as baking cookies or
giving gifts, and creating your own
wreath makes for a fun and attractive
craft project. It's also one that can
involve children, both in collecting the
materials and assembling the wreath.
Wreaths are more than just a
seasonal decoration. They remind us
that, like the intertwined greenery they
contain, we are all connected-woven
together by family and history. Turn to

Speaking of holiday traditions, few
are more time-honored than the baking
(and eating!) of holiday sweets such as
cookies, cakes and pies. If you're like
me, and you're more interested in
enjoying these treats than creating

some of our state's best bakeries.

terms of their style and products, but

offer a variety of delectable treats that
are sure to satisfy even the most
discriminating sweet tooth.
Finally, if you are feeling the pull of
the great outdoors this holiday season,

historic sites. Not only can you burn off
that extra slice of cake with a brisk walk,
but you can also participate in holiday
happenings.
