Create a wildlife habitat
The basics for wildlife
Several organizations certify backyard habitats in Georgia,
including Georgia Audubon's Wildlife Sanctuary Program, the
Garden Club of Georgia's Community Wildlife Project and the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Creating a Winter
Wildlife Wonderland initiative. One theme carries through
these programs: Food, a water source and shelter are necessary
to create a haven for wildlife.

urning your backyard into a wildlife habitat may be
easier than you think. Whether you live in an urban
area or out in the country, being mindful of the plants
and trees in your landscape is the first step in attracting birds
and other wildlife.
" Creating backyard habitats is more important than ever
to ensure the future populations of wildlife, " says Gabe Andrle,
conservation program coordinator for Georgia Audubon in
Atlanta. " You can dedicate a space as small as 50 square feet to
habitat development and do your part to slow the rapid decline
of birds, pollinators and other wildlife. "
At least one-third of the country's native species are either
imperiled or vulnerable, according to a 2018 report by the
National Wildlife Federation.
" A recent article published in the journal Science reported
that North America has lost nearly 3 billion birds since 1970.
Habitat loss and degradation tops the list of causes; each of us
can do our part to reverse this trend, " Andrle says.

such as the American black elderberry (Sambucus canadensis).

He suggests that homeowners turn to more natural landscaping, using native plants that local wildlife can use for food

Getting certified
Dan Coleman's nearly 2 acres in Coweta County have
already received certification from the Georgia Native Plant
Society and the National Wildlife Federation.
" Last spring, I found out that Georgia Audubon offered a
Wildlife Sanctuary Program, so my wife, Deb, and I decided to
