Sharing Georgia with others
[I was thinking of ] your magazine itself and all the many different people who get
to enjoy reading it. When I finish mine, I send it to my parents in Colorado.
Over the years, we've had many fun conversations stemming from the wide variety of Southern-themed articles in it. They, in turn, share items of interest from your
magazine with family and friends in Colorado who get to learn more about Georgia!
Thank you for your wonderful magazine, and may 2021 bring peace and comfort
to all of you and your readers!

Gifts galore from

GEORGIA

After the cancellation of most of 2020's in-person craft
markets, I opened an Etsy [online] shop. Thanks to the
S
Georgia Magazine article in November 2020 [see " Gifts
galore from Georgia, " page 16; bit.ly/gapr1120], my wool
bird ornaments traveled all over Georgia, including Elko,
Fargo and Hephzibah.
These Georgia sales led to increased Etsy exposure,
and by year-end 2020, Lyn's Wrens had " flown " to 36 states.
My shop, etsy.com/shop/LynsWrens, will be closed the
first half of this year to give me time to sew new birds for the
next holiday season.

LYN COSBY

Atlanta artist Lyn Cosby uses recycled, felted-wool
sweaters to create her imaginative birds for Lyn's Wrens. She
finds the sweaters at thrift shops and yard sales, then washes
them in very hot water until they turn into felt. Cosby does everything by hand: cutting the patterns and felt pieces, embroidering
and stitching. The crafty birds are ideal for tree ornaments or even
a year-round decoration, set in a window. In addition to cardinals,
chickadees, bluebirds, cedar waxwings and hummingbirds, she
crafts other critters, such as squirrels and chipmunks. Price: $19.

hopping amid the pandemic may be daunting, as we
avoid crowds and try to stay safe. But armed with a good
list of possibilities that are all Georgia-made, one may shop
comfortably from home, support a small local business and
discover unique, pleasing gifts.

On behalf of the staff at Hills & Dales Estate, I'd like to
express our sincerest gratitude for featuring us on your lovely

enced a tremendous influx of calls from people asking to
register for our workshops, and visitation over the holidays
was wonderful. We've had numerous folks mention that seeing the article in Georgia
Magazine is what prompted them to visit the estate.
December 2020 visitation was down only 4 percent compared with December
2019, which we consider a huge success, and we feel much of this can be attributed to
your feature.
We wish you the best in 2021 and hope you all will be able to visit the estate soon!

Cars keep us going
As an old muscle-car enthusiast, I wish to commend you and author Cameron
Whitlock on the great article in your December 2020 issue. [See " Keeping it classic, "
page 24; bit.ly/classic1220.]
The car club scene helps us keep sane in these trying times by focusing a little on
our car hobby. I especially enjoyed reading more about the Buick GS Club of America
out of Valdosta and its founder, Richard Lasseter. I've seen this club featured in many
national car publications, and it is one of the " biggies " of our hobby.
Thanks for a great magazine!

KISSED WITH LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

HEAT AND SWEET

Scotch bonnet pepper trees imported from
Jamaica are the source of the heat in delicious
jellies from Grump's Pepper Jelly. The Moultrie-based
company offers flavored pepper jellies alongside mild,
medium and hot versions of its original pepper jelly.
The medium-heat variety should pass muster with
anyone, whether dabbed on cream cheese and a
cracker or slathered on a roasted pork tenderloin. The
cranberry pepper jelly makes a nice embellishment for
a roasted turkey sandwich or a turkey breast. Flavors
include cranberry, blueberry, pineapple, wine and
South Georgia's favorite, mayhaw jelly. Prices: $10 for a
10-ounce jar; $25 for a three-jar gift pack.

March is Women's History
Month-celebrating the accomplishments of women throughout our
nation-so it seems appropriate that in
this issue we focus on women who have
made their mark on Georgia's history.
We were aided in our efforts to
identify and honor these trailblazing
women by an organization dedicated to
this purpose: the Georgia Women of
Achievement (GWA). The GWA's
Georgia Women's Hall of Fame is a
repository for the stories of these noteworthy women from throughout our
state. We focus on only three honorees
in our story, starting on page 16, but the
GWA features 94 more on its website at
georgiawomen.org.
The GWA was founded by former
first lady Rosalynn Carter, but that is
only one of her many accomplishments. Over the last 50 years she has
been a staunch advocate for mental
health programs, early childhood
immunization and human rights as
well as a partner in Habitat for Humanity's Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work
Project, an annual homebuilding blitz.
Turn to " First in our hearts, "
starting on page 36, to learn more about
these and other aspects of Carter's
legacy of caring.
From Rosalynn Carter, we turn to
Rosie the Riveter, heroine of a campaign to recruit female workers during
World War ll. Perhaps our nation's most
iconic image representing working
women, Rosie is now the namesake of
these women who made history by
taking on what traditionally had been
men's jobs in support of the war effort.
Although the call for women to
join the wartime work program was
meant to be temporary, the impact of
World War II on women changed the
American workplace forever, and
women's roles continued to expand.
Read " Georgia's Rosies, " starting on
page 20, to get a firsthand report from
two of these female trailblazers.
Enjoy!
