Middle Georgia couple lend a helping
hand after hurricane

n October 2018, Nathan and Jessa Fisher, of
Perry, watched TV weather reports as a swirling
storm in the Gulf of Mexico grew from a small
tropical depression into monstrous Hurricane
Michael. On Oct. 10, the Category 5 hurricane
crashed into Mexico Beach, Fla., and computer
models showed it making a beeline toward Middle
Georgia.
" We knew it was going to be bad, " says Nathan
Fisher, who owns Fisher Construction, a business his

grandfather, J.N. Stokes, started in 1965. " We're in the concrete
business, so we have big equipment. We went on Facebook the
night before it reached Houston County and told people in our
community to call us if they needed help moving trees out of
driveways or roads, and that we would do it for free. "
He says he and his wife just wanted to help others who
found themselves in difficult situations. His phone began
ringing just before the sun came up and revealed what Fisher
describes as " a mess. "
" Trees and limbs were down everywhere, " he recalls. " My
wife and I drove our dump truck and
hauled the backhoe behind us on a
trailer. I ran the chain saw and drove the
tractor, and she loaded limbs and debris. "
On their way from one place to
another, the Fishers stopped at houses
that hadn't called them and told them
they'd come back and help, and they did.
" It was a long day, but it felt good to
work hard and know we were really helping people out of a bind, " he says.
Fisher says they helped eight families that first day. For the next three days,
he and his work crew helped eight more
strangers.
" When we were done with our job
for the day, we'd go back out and help
who we could, " he says. " Some tried
to pay us, but we wouldn't take their
money. Their 'thank you' was enough. "
Nathan Fisher has performed other
random acts of kindness, too.
" A man called me one time and told
me his son had been in a wreck that left
him paralyzed from the waist down, " he
says. " They were remodeling the home
and needed a wheelchair ramp. "
Fisher and his crew showed up and
poured the concrete because " it was the
right thing to do. "
He wishes he could serve more.
