PSC Vice Chairman Echols named
'Innovator of the Year'
eorgia Public Service Commission (PSC)
Vice Chairman Tim Echols was named the
Innovator of the Year June 8 as part of the
2021 Game Changers Awards at The Smart Grid
Customer Education Symposium, produced by
Philadelphia-based SmartEnergy IP.
Echols is a longtime champion of
solar energy, electric vehicles (EVs),
nuclear power and customer rate savings
through efforts to educate the public
about home energy usage.
" We are very lucky to have a commissioner
who has such an appreciation for innovation and
technology and a fearlessness about it. [He understands]
the business case for these investments, and
it's exciting to have [Echols] in this role, " symposium
founder Juliet Shavit said.
Echols previously was named the Solar
Architect for Georgia as well as part of the Dynamic
Duo for EVs. He received the Nuclear Trailblazer
award from the U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Council.
" He has a boundless curiosity when it comes
to energy generation and our grid. Tim is constantly
traveling our state educating our citizens. ... I can't
think of anyone more deserving than Commissioner

Become 'BearWise' to avoid run-ins with nature
potting a bear from a distance can be exciting, but officials
with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources warn
that when bears start frequenting places like your back
porch, raiding a trash can or destroying a birdfeeder, it
presents a potentially dangerous situation.
Black bear biologists have created safety tips, known
as BearWise Basics, to help humans peacefully coexist with
these wild animals.
" Avoiding problems with bears is usually simple,
though it may not always be convenient. One of the BearWise
Basics is about securing food, garbage and recycling, "
says Adam Hammond, the Wildlife Resources Division's
(WRD) state bear biologist. " When bears have access to
human-provided foods, regardless of the source or the intent,
they will take advantage of them. "
Bears that find an easy source for " free meals " will become
bolder over time, WRD officials say, which could lead to potential
damage to homes, garages and vehicles.
