named 'Día de Muertos,' also known in English as
'Day of the Dead.' It was simply adorable. "
When special-interest and business groups enter,
they frequently follow the theme of their mission
when designing their entries. For example, the Metro
Atlanta Beekeepers Association recently created a
giant beekeeper as its scarecrow.
Bennett says that many groups begin their planning
as soon as the previous year's exhibit is over.
" Being able to scope out the current entries fuels the
competitive spirit for subsequent entries. The hardest
part [for us] is having to limit the total entries to
100 in Atlanta. "
Rules of the game
Registration for this year's exhibition opened
in early August, and participants were accepted
on a first-come, first-served basis. Entries cannot
include live plant materials that need to be watered
or cared for during the exhibition. Displays must be
free-standing and able to remain intact in all kinds of
weather.

The maximum weight for each scarecrow is 50 pounds. Participants
cannot include company logos, hashtags or websites unless they are
registered in the business category. Entries are dropped off the last week of
September and placed by staff throughout the gardens.
Both locations host Goblins in the Garden, a youth-oriented costume
event on Oct. 24. The Fest-of-Ale-a celebration of craft brews, music and
entertainment-takes place every evening except Mondays throughout
October at the Atlanta location.
" Scarecrows in the Garden is really a big deal for our family every year, "
Lori Van Duyne says. " We always look forward to the process of deciding on
a theme and then getting creative together to figure out how best to bring
our vision to life. We really enjoy visiting the botanical gardens to see what
other teams have come up with. "
