7. Jobs at electric co-ops are similar all over the country.
Sarah Gunn, left, a member solutions representative
at Flint Energies, began her co-op career in
customer service in Montana. CEO Jeremy Nelms
has a co-op engineering background and
7
served as the executive vice president/general manager
at Blue Ridge Mountain EMC in Young Harris
before working at Flint Energies.
She points to leadership and volunteer service in economic
development, education, and youth and charitable-giving
programs.
Serving the community also is important to Jarrod Kilgore, a
system engineering supervisor with Carroll EMC in Carrollton.
" My work is not lining the pockets of investors or a small
group of people. My work is improving the lives of our members
by providing reliable power and service at the best value, "
Kilgore says.
And, best of all, those served are his neighbors, friends and
family members.
Jobs of the future
EMCs provide opportunities for professionals to have
rewarding and fulfilling careers outside of large metro areas.
And with many in the EMCs' current leadership teams
edging closer to retirement, there will be openings statewide for
bright, talented people, Bridges says.
Almost half of the top leaders at Georgia's EMCs-including
general managers, assistant general managers, chief executive
officers and chief operating officers-will be eligible for retirement
in the next five years.
Additionally, retirement turnover is expected of roughly
one-fourth of employees in administrative services, procurement,
accounting and financial services and operations, according
to data collected by the National Rural Electric Cooperative
Association (NRECA) in Arlington, Va.
The national trade association is looking for military veterans
to fill some of these positions. Vets Power Us is an NRECA
initiative focused on recruiting, hiring and honoring veterans.
Military experience helps develop the technical and leadership
skills highly favored at EMCs. Because co-op jobs include
many high-tech services-such as broadband, cybersecurity
and electric vehicles-recruiting veterans is a way to build a
" next-generation workforce, " NRECA Communications Manager
Kate Tillotson says.
In addition, more than 40 percent of the nation's veterans
are from rural communities, says Desiree Dunham, program
director for Vets Power Us.
" If they want to return home or move somewhere in rural
America, they know that we have a variety of jobs, ranging from
linework to technical positions, " she says.
The Vets Power Us initiative includes a jobs repository so
veterans can find co-op opportunities nationwide.
Georgia co-ops expect to implement more automation in
the next five years, which will require a workforce with strong

Supervisor Addis Kifl e, with
Georgia Transmission Corp.
(GTC) in Tucker, connects to a
substation relay panel for testing.
GTC plans, builds and maintains more
than 3,500 miles of the state's
high-voltage power lines.

technical skills and the
ability to communicate the
information, Wilson says. She
forecasts job growth in fiber
optics, cybersecurity and data
analytics.
Georgia's EMCs rate these
positions the most challenging to fill:
lineworkers, staking technicians and professionals in engineering,
information systems, accounting and human resources. In
addition, the need is constant for customer service workers and
bilingual employees throughout the state.
Linemen in demand
Several of Georgia's technical colleges offer electrical lineworker
programs, and some co-ops give scholarships to increase
the pool of qualified candidates.
According to college officials, South Georgia Technical
College in Americus has trained hundreds of students through
its eight-week Electrical Lineworker Apprentice Certificate
Training program, which started in 2005. Similar programs
are offered at North Georgia Technical College in Clarkesville,
Atlanta Technical College in Atlanta, Coastal Pines Technical
College in Waynesboro and Georgia Piedmont Technical College
in Clarkston.
There's financial help available as well.
Carroll EMC offers lineman school scholarships using funds
from unclaimed capital credits. The program is approved annually
by its board to help address the lack of qualified lineworkers.
Since 2018, Carroll EMC has awarded 15 $5,000 scholarwww.georgiamagazine.org
