TURNED-WOOD ORIGINALS
Al Medlock is the artist behind Oggie's Originals in Kibbee. From his home studio
he works with various media, including oil paint and wood. Medlock learned how to
burn and carve wood by watching " how-to " videos on YouTube. After much practice making
ink pens and cutting boards, he sold enough to buy a big lathe and started turning
bowls. Some of his recent work garnered awards at the Georgia National Fair in Perry.
" I love it! It's so much fun. You never know what's inside the wood, " he says. Great gifts
include those pens, but he also teaches classes on how to turn your own pen or other
objects. Bowls are food-safe, but keep them out of the dishwasher. Prices: $20 to $65 for
pens; $35 to $300 for bowls; $60 to $75 for cutting boards; $15 for instructional classes.

ARTISTRY
The French way with chocolate is the
stock in trade at A Cacao Aff air, founded
in 2013 by Orléans, France, native Karl
Vivier and his wife, Eva. While chocolate
is the main draw, their classic Parisian
macarons and fl avored sea-salt caramels
are outstanding as well. Vivier combines
Swiss chocolate with diff erent fl avors,
such as Georgia olive oil, saff ron, Tahitian
vanilla and black tea. He also crafts unique,
custom chocolate shapes. Want a life-size
chocolate football? A woman's highheeled
shoe? A purse? All are possible.
Only natural ingredients are used. Prices:
$10 for a box of four chocolates; $12 for
six macarons; $14 for a half-pound bag of
caramels; $34 for chocolate stiletto-heeled
shoe fi lled with dipped strawberries.

and Deborah Martin have made the
didgeridoo a work not only of music but
also of visual art. The couple studied in
Australia with aboriginal people and
learned to play this long, cylindrical
wind instrument that's a product of
aboriginal culture dating back about
1,500 years. Recording as Martin &
Scott, they perform a variety of music,
which may be purchased via Spotify and
Amazon. Their CD " Primal Resonance "
is the result of their six-week journey
to Australia and the music they wrote
for the didgeridoo while there. " Every song has a story, " Martin says. Prices: $8 to $12 for
music; $45 to $95 for exquisitely decorated, bamboo didgeridoos; $200 and up for those
made from agave cactus.

SPECIALTY COOKIES
Distressed that he couldn't fi nd fresh Dutch stroopwafels to suit his exacting standards,
Fayetteville resident and Netherlands native Guido Vliegen and his U.S.-born wife,
Leslie, launched a bakery last year to produce them. 3Bros Dutch Cookies, named for the
couple's three sons, produces
thin, cinnamon waffl e-like
cookies stuff ed with a blend of
butter and sugar-beet molasses.
Vliegen explains that the cookies
must be very fresh and are best
savored warm; he recommends
resting one briefl y over a mug
of hot coff ee to achieve the
desired eff ect. Prices: $12 to $40
for gift packages, some of which
include the company's signature
coff ee mug.
