Venues off er food as well as live
performances
T
he classic date-night combination of dinner and a show
remains popular, but planning such an outing takes a bit
of logistical forethought regarding timing and locations.
Fortunately, some destinations make the pairing easier by
putting it all in one place. Here are a few options for an
entertaining and delicious evening.
Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse,
Atlanta
At the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse in downtown Atlanta,
having both dinner and a show together is an attractive option
for those who don't want to hunt twice for parking spaces.
" Here, it's one place where you park, get settled, have
dinner, then see a show, " says Jeffrey Watkins, artistic director
of the Atlanta Shakespeare Co., the tavern's resident troupe.
" You don't have to rush to finish eating or worry that the waiter
is running late. And you don't have to get to your car, move and
park it again. "
Since 1990, the company has been presenting the works of
William Shakespeare and a smattering of period pieces. Crowdpleasers
are often the works people recall from high
school, Watkins says: " Romeo and Juliet, " " Macbeth "
and " Twelfth Night. " Productions of " The Canterbury
Tales " by Geoffrey Chaucer and " The Crucible " by
Arthur Miller also may show up on the bill.
" The silliest thing we do each August is the
complete works of William Shakespeare in about 90
minutes, " Watkins says. " Otherwise, we do the entire
canon, including 'real hard Bard' like 'Pericles' and
'King John.' For people with more than a passing acquaintance
[with Shakespeare], it's a chance to see a
full version of a play most commercial theaters don't
