Winston-Salem cafe, " he says. " The idea
became so popular that I asked other
folks in the area to sell their work this way.
Since it's a challenge for artists to get their
work out there, many of them said 'yes.' "
Today, nearly 200 Art-o-mat vending
machines can be found from Massachusetts
to Hawaii; three additional machines
are in Australia, Austria and Ottawa,
Canada. Georgia is home to four: at the
E Center in Sugar Hill; at the Omni Hotel
at The Battery Atlanta, near Truist Park
in Atlanta; at the Georgia Tech Library
in Atlanta; and at Rock City Gardens in
Lookout Mountain.
" People can purchase a piece of art
for $5, but our artists don't do this for
the money, " Whittington says. " It's more
about participating in something different
and in getting their art [out to] a diverse
audience. It complements
their other artistic practices. "
Alison Valk, instructional
coordinator and multimedia
librarian for the Georgia Tech
Library, was looking for
new ways to engage Tech's
students in arts programming.
She helped bring a space- and
science-themed Art-o-mat to
campus last fall.
" It was more successful
than I thought it would
be. I didn't know how an
old-school vending machine
would appeal to students today ... but
it's been really popular, " she says. " [Our
students] are interested in maker-spaces
and building and creating things. ... You
can buy art from [the machine], but also
the Art-o-mat project invites people to

Preston-based artist Debbie Bankston
shows some of the miniature pieces she has
created for Art-o-mat. " The value of the
therapy I have gotten from being involved
with Art-o-mat has been priceless ... The
friendships [I've] made along the way are the
best, " she wrote on her Facebook page.
