food bank, headquartered in
Valdosta, covers 26 South Georgia
counties, spanning from the Okefenokee
Swamp to Alabama. With branch offices in
Thomasville and Tifton, Second Harvest serves
more than 400 partner agencies through a variety of
feeding programs.
According to several national reports and the U.S. Census,
the region has the highest poverty and food-insecurity rates
in the state and among the highest nationally. One in four
children lives in a home without enough food, and one in five
South Georgians of all ages doesn't know the source of his
or her next meal.
The food bank has seen an influx of South Georgians who
struggle to put nutritious food on their tables consistently.
One-third of Second Harvest clients who received help
during the pandemic were first-time clients, McCall says. And
the needs were so great during those early months that Georgia
National Guardsmen helped distribute food as it became
difficult to get volunteers.
" In South Georgia, food insecurity is already a crisis, and
then you take that and compound it with children out of school
and they can no longer access the school lunches and parents
out of work because they have to stay home with kids, " McCall
says. " It has been a challenge, but our team
has been wonderful, and they have risen to
the occasion, which is awesome. "
Two groups in need
Homegrown Help began in May 2020 as markets for
local farmers' products were starting to dry up and restaurants
weren't purchasing as much produce. AgGeorgia Farm Credit
wanted to do something to help those struggling with food
insecurity and assist farmers at the same time. So McCall met
with the lending cooperative's leadership for a " brainstorming
session " and emerged with the Homegrown Help program.
AgGeorgia donated $25,000 to start the farm-to-food-bank
initiative and gave another $50,000 to distribute among other
regional food banks in areas heavily populated by farmers.
" Our board really wanted to help. We wanted to find a way
to keep money going to local farmers, " says Corey W. Cottle,
director of marketing for AgGeorgia Farm Credit state offices
in Perry.
Early in the pandemic, " we had a lot of supply-chain
breakdowns where farmers couldn't get their product to the
market, " he says.
For example, grocery stores didn't have milk for people to
purchase, and dairy farmers couldn't get milk to the stores to sell.
