for this month in Roswell.
" We are in over 50 schools right now, and that
number was even higher before COVID, " says Louis
Alderman, a Kid Chess coach. " We've worked with
over 3,000 students concurrently. We also offer
online chess clubs and camps for young players in
other parts of the state. "
Rome, Valdosta, Clayton, Chatsworth and
other Georgia communities have vibrant chess
clubs that encourage newcomers to visit and learn
the ancient game.
Tom Tran facilitates the Houston County Chess
Club (HCCC) in Warner Robins.
" Our club has probably been around for about

meetings every Monday.
makes the game an option for children and adults with limited
resources. As part of its outreach arm, the GCA visits schools in
underserved communities of metro Atlanta and introduces the
students to chess.
Finally, Watkins notes that the ancient game is welcoming
to people of all ages. Someone who is 8 can play someone who
is 80.
" A fourth grader [Jwalanthi Ram of Fulton Academy of
Virtual Excellence] tied for our Georgia women's title this
past year, " he says. " It happens sometimes. Age is not the best
predictor of success in chess. "
Rooks, bishops, knights and pawns
Hundreds of chess aficionados around Georgia work to
offer chess to their communities in the form of clubs, workshops
and after-school programs.
One such program is Kid Chess, kidchess.com, a critically
acclaimed after-school program that serves public and private
schools and home-school groups in greater metro Atlanta.
Founded in 1998 by former Southeastern U.S. chess champion
Justin Morrison, the organization also offers small-group
instruction, tournaments, private lessons, advanced lessons and
seasonal camps, including a spring break chess camp scheduled
20 years, but in 2018, we made it an official club, "
Tran says. " In the last two years, we've met at a
member's home and played over-the-board, face-toface
games on Thursday evenings. It's free. We tell
people: 'Just show up. You'll love it.' "
Tran says that HCCC membership consists of
people of all ages and varying skill levels who share a
love of chess, enjoy friendly competition and want to improve.
" We also meet online at lichess.org every Monday at 8 p.m.
for team tournaments, " he says. " And our club members have
traveled half a dozen times to Grandmaster Ben Finegold's
Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Atlanta [in Roswell] and
played in the U.S. Chess Federation-rated tournaments there. "
Not everyone dreams of being a chess champion. Some
just want to retreat from today's digital devices and revisit the
timeless one-on-one games of yesteryear. Others enjoy the
challenge.
Whatever the motivation, chess is a winning experience
for all.

How ancient?
The history of chess is subject to some debate, but the website
chess.com traces its origins to the Indian game of chaturanga before
the 600s A.D. The game evolved over time and spread throughout
Europe and Asia. The modern form of chess took shape in the
16th century, and the pieces were standardized in the 19th century.
