LaGrange museum offers a
walk through biblical history
H
as a Bible story ever made you wonder what
life was truly like thousands of years ago? An
innovative museum in west Georgia offers
visitors an authentic glimpse of ancient Israel.
The Biblical History Center (BHC) in LaGrange
was founded in 2006 through a partnership with
the Callaway Foundation, also in LaGrange, and
James Fleming, who taught at Hebrew University
in Jerusalem and led archaeological work in Israel
for more than 40 years. Since its doors opened,
thousands of people have toured the BHC to see,
feel and taste what life was like in biblical times.
" Not everyone can make it to Israel, " Executive
Director Carlos Cantu says. " So why not come here? "
While the center is dedicated to bringing biblical
history to life, it is not affiliated with any denomination
and does not proselytize. History buffs, whether
religious or not, will find much to intrigue them.
" Our mission is to help people encounter the

ancient biblical world and its history and culture, " Cantu says.
" It's an honor to serve and do what we do. "
Walking through history
Visitors to the BHC encounter their first history lesson
outside the front door in a " time tunnel " of small-scale replicas
of a Canaanite temple, an Israelite shrine, a Jewish synagogue
and a Byzantine church. Each area highlights the progression
of architectural styles from 1500 B.C. to 500 A.D. and compares
religious beliefs and practices specific to each period.
Tours begin in the Archaeological Replica Garden, which
features 23 full-scale reconstructions of excavation sites in
Israel, Malta and Jordan. In a nod to authenticity, the replicas
are constructed with imported limestone and feature plants
mentioned in the Bible, including bulrushes, papyrus, barley,
pomegranates and a transplanted 200-year-old olive tree.
Visitors who reserve a guided tour will be led by a docent in
biblical attire, and self-guided tours are also available.
