Georgians feel the pinch at the
pumps, change habits
W
ith the recent surge in oil prices worldwide,
gas prices have jumped to more
than $4 per gallon in many places, hitting
many Georgians in the wallet as they fuel up
for spring travel plans.
" The Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified
what was already a global oil market that was tight
on supplies, " says Montrae Waiters, a spokeswoman
for Michigan-based AAA The Auto Club
Group. " Sanctions and regulations have effectively
removed Russian oil from the market. Prices accelerated
[in early March], when OPEC and its allies announced that they would not
ramp up production beyond the modest increases previously planned. "
AAA reports that because of recent gas prices, some Georgians have modified
their driving habits:
* 34 percent are driving less often;
* 23 percent are driving shorter distances;
* 23 percent participate in fuel-rewards programs; and
* 21 percent combined errands and trips to limit driving time.
" While drivers can't control the price they see at the pump, there are some simple
ways to get the most for your money when you fill up, " Waiters says. " First, ensure your
vehicle is properly maintained so you get optimal fuel economy. "
Other suggestions include signing up for fuel-rewards programs for some gas
stations, shopping for the lowest gas prices using smartphone apps and paying in
cash to possibly get a better price per gallon.
For best fuel efficiency, remove extra weight from your vehicle, slow down and
avoid stop-and-go traffic, as speeding and aggressive acceleration and braking reduce
fuel economy.
