Helping others is a must
MUST was started in 1971 by the Rev. Wayne Williams, a
Methodist youth pastor who wanted to provide food and clothing
for the elderly and disenfranchised. The organization has
never veered from its initial mission-only added to it. Its goal is
to eradicate homelessness by helping the destitute or stepping
in to see others through temporary hardships.
The nonprofit's Marietta, Canton and Smyrna service
centers assist those struggling financially by providing food,
hygiene products and clothing. In addition, the centers guide
the jobless and the underemployed to find work.
During the last fiscal year, from July 2020 through June
2021, MUST Ministries gave away 2.6 million pounds of food,
served 45,851 people and provided temporary housing for 3,413.
On any given night, almost 400 people find a safe place to
lay their heads under the MUST umbrella of the homeless
shelter or at an apartment or hotel.
The organization provides a safety net, primarily for singleparent
families, says Reighard, now in his 11th year at the helm.
Of its clientele, 84 percent are women and children, and half of
those served are 17 and younger.
" Suburban poverty is the fastest-growing poverty in
America, " Reighard says. " We serve the working poor. Some
are working two or three jobs. "
Area co-ops lend a hand
The nonprofit has support from thousands
of volunteers-including those from its next-door
neighbor, Cobb Electric Membership Corp. (EMC)
in Marietta-who help carry out its services. For
example, Cobb EMC employees have supplied donations
for Cobb Diaper Day and delivered blankets to
the nonprofit as part of the Cobb EMC Foundation's
Volts of Joy, an ongoing community project to spread
happiness with random acts of kindness.
" When you say the name of MUST Ministries,
people [here] know exactly who you are talking about
and how much good they do, and people are ready
to help, " says Mark Justice, Cobb EMC director of
education and community relations.
In addition, many co-op staffers go the extra
mile to help make sandwiches for the ministry's
Summer Lunch Program, serving more than 500,000
hungry children who usually receive free and
reduced-cost meals at school.
" We all just join together and make thousands
of sandwiches, " Justice says. " It's always a neat thing
to do. We even had our president/CEO [Kevan Espy]
down there making sandwiches. "
