Venturing
way off the beaten path

oading up the van and heading out on a road trip across the United States may
be a common occurrence, but few people take the time to really tour all 50 states.
It took Dalton resident and veterinarian Jimmy Emerson 13 years to
complete his goal of traveling to all 3,143 American counties (or county
equivalents).
" The last jurisdiction [I] 'collected' was in an Alaskan area known as the
Northwest Arctic Borough, " he says, reflecting on the accomplishment that in 2019
earned him the honor of being the 63rd person to achieve the ultimate objective of
the Extra Miler Club, extramilerclub.com.
" There have been only 66 'county completers,' " says club secretary Valerie
Naylor of Rapid City, S.D. " Some people collect the number of states they have
visited. Our members collect how many counties or equivalents each of us has
visited. Some are parishes, while other jurisdictions are referred to as boroughs. "
Members of the Extra Miler Club are a diverse group.
" We have little kids just getting started with
their parents, teenagers and elderly members, "
Naylor says.

counties-or 60 percent of America's counties.
" I think I first started keeping track when
I was in graduate school around 1989. Later I
went back and reconstructed my major trips
from childhood forward and added those into
the total, " he says.
The tally of counties visited is based on an
unwritten code of honor that a person actually
traveled into the " collected " county. In fact, there
is only one club rule: Flying over a county does
not count, because, according to the club
website, " it is too hard to read the signs that
announce you are entering a new county. "

foot or by plane or boat, but just stepping over a
county line qualifies. Adding counties visited
before joining the club, as Taylor did around
2004, is permissible.
