craft breweries here in downtown Macon
and excellent (but affordable) food
options. Plus, it's right in the middle of [Georgia], so I can use Bibb County as a
home base for exploring the whole state, " Taylor says.
Making unusual memories
Along the way, some unexpected vacation memories occur. Emerson recalls
being caught in a bison " traffic jam " in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in
North Dakota and having to wait until the buffalo got out of the road to proceed.
In Oregon he met a woman selling cherries on the side of the road; she turned
out to be a cousin of someone he knew in Dalton.
" She recognized my Southern accent, " he says.
He also remembers discovering the only wooden courthouse still in use
in Colorado. It was there that, in 1883, Alfred " Alferd " Packer became the only
person in U.S. history to be convicted of cannibalism.
" It is not the type of thing you uncover on a traditional vacation, "
Emerson says.
Taylor remembers talking with the monks who make and sell jam
at Poorrock Abbey in Eagle Harbor, Mich.
" They were much chattier folks than I expected, " he says. " Marin
County, Calif., should also get special notice, since I got there by walking
across the Golden Gate Bridge on a rather windy, chilly day. "
