Grab a fork, hit the road
A
lpharetta native Skye Estroff long dreamed of hosting a TV show
focused on her favorite topic: food. Her childhood love of food
found her cooking cornflake-crusted chicken, angel food cakes
and red velvet cupcakes. She checked cookbooks out of the library and
learned how to score cucumbers and turn tomatoes into garnishes.
Her high school electives were nutrition classes, and, as an undergrad
at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, she majored in dietetics
because it was the only course linked to food.
All along, Estroff was drawn to TV shows about food. After graduating
from UGA in 2015, she worked with the Taste of Atlanta food festival and
the " Atlanta Eats " TV show, and she handled marketing and social media
for several food-industry clients.
But in 2019, she turned her energies to creating her own show,
" Foodie Road Trip. " The pilot episode launched in April 2020, just as the
COVID pandemic hit, and plans for the program to air on WSB-TV in
Atlanta were canceled. Estroff switched gears and paired with streaming
services, and Season 1 of the show debuted this year.
Episodes of " Foodie Road Trip " are 25 minutes long and take viewers
on a culinary tour of hidden culinary gems, mom and pop favorites and
destination restaurants in some of Estroff's favorite Georgia towns.
" Vidalia is where my grandparents live, and they'd taken me to new
restaurants in town, so that's where [the show] started, " Estroff says. " Tybee
Island was the next choice because my parents live there. The third was
Alpharetta since I grew up there and had good relationships with restaurant
owners there. "
In each location, Estroff showcases a mix of cuisines.
" I didn't want two Italian or two seafood restaurants, " she says. " It
had to represent diverse cuisines and a mix that represented the town, not

just one type of food. I know we're in the South, but
grits aren't the only thing out there. We've covered
seafood towers, sushi and wine slushies, too. "
For Season 2, Estroff hopes to expand into other
Southern states.
" Georgia has so much to share, but I know there
are great places in South Carolina, Alabama and
North Carolina, too, " she says.

Cobb student wins
