The harvest of honey:
nature's sweetener
H
oney has been prized all over the world for centuries.
A cave painting in the province of Valencia, Spain, is
estimated to be about 8,000 years old and depicts a
human figure climbing what looks like a rope ladder to retrieve
this sweet delicacy while bees swarm around her. This scene is
considered the oldest depiction of honey gathering.
Today in Georgia, beekeeping has experienced a surge in
popularity, which makes finding locally produced honey
fairly easy.
Since 1920, the Georgia Beekeepers Association (GBA)
has been a resource for backyard beekeepers. Its website,
gabeekeeping.com, offers a comprehensive list of local beekeeping
clubs and producers of honey-related products, along
with dates of honey shows, where local beekeepers vie for top
honors for their honeys, meads and other bee-related products.
You also may have seen the
GBA's honeybee license plates
on Georgia vehicles. Since late
2019, the plates have helped
raise funds for beekeeper education,
honeybee health research
and awareness campaigns about
the importance of pollinators.
" [It has been] one of the
most successful license plates
in the country, " GBA President
Gina Gallucci says, referencing
the funds raised by the tags-close to $10,000 per month, which
is dispensed in grants to its members. For information about

Marietta resident Jimmy Gatt, president of the all-volunteer
Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association, metroatlantabee
keepers.org, says that most of the group's 500 members are
backyard beekeepers. The organization meets monthly at the

Association educate the public about the importance
of pollinators and provide grants to members.
Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta's Buckhead
community. Meetings feature local speakers and are open to
nonmembers who are curious about beekeeping. Members also
offer help if a honeybee swarm needs to be relocated safely.
Like many beekeepers, Gatt is a proponent of locally
produced honey. The flavor and color of honey vary depending
on which flowers the bees visited to collect nectar. Honey
