Youths place in national
history competition

his June, 66 young Georgians presented
their historical research projects at the
National History Day (NHD) national contest,
held virtually. Several Georgians won awards
for their work during the 2021-22 school year. The
NHD program encourages middle and high school
students to participate in historical research and
scholarship with their teachers and peers.
" History Day is an almost 50-year-old
program that grew from an initiative in Ohio and
[became] something that takes place in each
state, " says Laura McCarty, president of Georgia
Humanities in Atlanta, an NHD Georgia co-sponsor
along with LaGrange College in LaGrange.
Every year, the NHD assigns a theme for
student research projects. The 2022 theme was
" Debate and Diplomacy in History: Success,
Failures, Consequences. " During the school year,
students choose a topic related to the year's theme
and develop their projects by conducting research
under the guidance of a teacher-sponsor.
National History Day holds contests at the
regional, state and national levels. For the 2022
NHD Georgia contest, 426 students from across
Georgia presented 249 NHD projects, with
66 students qualifying for nationals.
At nationals this year, Jonathan Dorminy of
Drew Searles
McDonough earned second place and the special
prize for White House History for his senior-level
dramatic performance of " The Secret Christmas
Trip to the White House: Debate and Diplomacy
at the Arcadia Conference of World War II. "
Also at nationals, Drew Searles and Ismini
Vasiloglou of Marietta were awarded second
place for their junior-level group exhibit, " A New
Paradigm for Policy: How the Truman Doctrine
Shaped U.S. Diplomacy. "
Each year, NHD's national conference is held
at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
The national contest attracts participants from
all 50 U.S. states and from international schools
in China, Korea and Asia. This year, the NHD
national contest was held June 12-18.
" It's amazing and inspiring to see this next

generation of Georgians leading the way and
helping us understand why the past is relevant
to what we're thinking about now and decisions
we're making for the future, " McCarty says.
