Santa's helpers: North Georgia Electric Membership Corp. (EMC) in Dalton donated
$1,000 in Operation Round Up funds toward the area's 14th Christmas in July effort,
which provided 103 families in northwest Georgia with gifts at the start of the
school year. Families were given books, health and hygiene products, clothing, bedding,
towels, cleaning supplies, school supplies and gift cards for food. In Operation
Round Up, members opt to round their monthly bills to the nearest dollar, with the
difference going into a fund that supports charitable causes in the community.

arroll Electric Membership Corp. (EMC)
in Carrollton was named the Northwest
Region Business Partner of the Year by the
Georgia Association of Career and Technical
Education for the co-op's participation in Carroll
County Schools' Work-Based Learning Program.
The association also named Carroll EMC
employee Tyree Boss as Work-Based Learning
Student of the Year for the region. Boss, a recent
graduate of Bowdon High School and a student in
the Work-Based Learning Program, is pursuing a
heavy-diesel certification while working part time
in Carroll EMC's vehicle shop.
Carroll EMC's work-study program offers
career-development opportunities through paid
and unpaid work experience for select, highpotential
students in high school and college.
Since 2000, more than 70 students have been
hired through Carroll EMC's work-study program,
and 25 remain at the cooperative as full-time
employees. Students are encouraged to crosstrain
in different departments, including administration,
technology, logistics and construction.
As a Work-Based Learning Program business
partner for more than a decade, Carroll EMC
supports the program's mission to prepare
students for the world of work through both
academic and workplace learning. Student
supervisors work closely with program
coordinators to mentor students.
Soft touch: The Central Georgia EMC
Foundation in Jackson donated $4,000
in Operation Round Up funds to Busy
Bees of Monticello, the local affiliate of
Project Linus, a national organization
that makes blankets and distributes
them to children and teens in traumatic
situations.
Honored alum: Tony Tucker, president
and CEO of Camilla-based Mitchell EMC,
received the Outstanding Business
Leader Award from the Tifton-based
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Alumni Association at its Homecoming
Awards Luncheon. Tucker previously served as office manager at Irwin EMC in
Ocilla. He also is on the board of directors for Tucker-based Georgia Transmission
Corp. and is president of the Go Energy Financial Credit Union board of directors.
Teachers' pet: Colquitt EMC in Moultrie received the School Bell Award from the
Colquitt County Retired Educators Association. The annual award recognizes a
person or company that has supported education, and the cooperative long has
provided local students and teachers with academic scholarships and grants.
Since 2006, Colquitt EMC has awarded $3.5 million in academic scholarships to
1,275 students. Last year, the cooperative awarded $17,766 in Bright Ideas grants
to local teachers to benefit their classrooms.
Energy outlook: Representatives of Tucker-based Georgia EMC, Covington-based
Snapping Shoals EMC and Jefferson-based Jackson EMC attended the Electric
Mobility Summit at the University of Georgia's (UGA) Continuing Education Center
in Athens on April 29. The event, hosted by the UGA College of Engineering,
included electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, suppliers, academics and
representatives of electric utilities. The event focused on the challenges and
opportunities that widespread EV adoption will bring in the coming years.
Topics included charging infrastructure, supply chain concerns, workforce
development and potential public-policy changes.
FFA funding: The Nahunta-based Okefenoke Rural EMC Foundation awarded a
grant for $5,000 to Camden County FFA Alumni to benefit the St. Marys Middle
School FFA program. The funds will be used for a livestock trailer.
Running totals: Altamaha EMC in Lyons and Canoochee EMC in Reidsville were
sponsors of the seventh annual Chick-fil-A Vidalia Road Race on March 5. Proceeds
from the event benefited three local ministries that support children and young
adults: the Paul Anderson Youth Home, WinShape Camps for Communities and the
Vidalia Heritage Academy.
New scholarships: Jackson EMC donated $5,000 to the North Georgia Technical
College Foundation to be used for two $2,500 scholarships-one for this fall
semester, which began in late August, and the other for the spring semester next
year. The scholarships will support students in the college's electrical lineworker
program at either its Clarkesville or Blairsville campus.
