Georgia Nagle painted these white fl owers at Briarwood Park in Brookhaven. When a couple
got married nearby, she took photos for them and then gave them her completed painting
as a wedding gift.

bit looser when I paint [outside]. There's just a different energy to my brushwork when
I'm outdoors. "
Boyd spends about two hours on each outdoor project. He's toured Darien,
Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island and rural Georgia looking for
points of interest to capture in oils.
" I'll often stop and ask someone, 'Where's the oldest part of your town?,' and I go
from there, " he says. " I'm drawn to texture-like an old boat, old building, old sign,
even old people. Those things have so much character and fill me with nostalgia. I feel
that through my art, I am preserving remnants of life that are rapidly becoming extinct. "
Last year, as he and artist friends channeled their surroundings at a farm outside
of Woodbury, Boyd noticed a rooster studying him.
" He strutted around me, so I kept my eyes on him, " he says. " Next thing I know,
that rooster was attacking me in the barn, and he drew blood! "
Two paintings Boyd completed that day bookmark the infamous rooster incident,
and one sold on the first day of Open Air Meriwether, an annual plein-air invitational
held in Meriwether County.
Amid wind gusts, heat and humidity, mosquitoes and rogue roosters, plein-air
painters put their blood, sweat and tears into capturing the scenic wonders that make
Georgia home sweet home.
