foliage in the summer that turns bright, crimson red
in the fall.
" 'Emperor' can tolerate a bit more sun than
'Bloodgood,' has more vivid bright-red foliage in the
spring and fall and is more frost-resistant. "
'Tamukeyama,' another of his favorite varieties,
is a mounding dwarf, usually growing 6 to 8 feet tall.
Its lace-like leaves grow on cascading branches and
can tolerate sun. Its deep-red bark and pale-yellow
branches provide winter interest.
" 'Sango Kaku' is one of my top picks
because of its coral-colored bark, " Gibbs says.
" Typically light green or greenish-yellow in
the spring and summer, the leaves in the
fall first turn yellow with pastel peach or
apricot edges and then change to golden.
It's quite showy and makes an excellent
focal point in the landscape. "
Caring for Japanese maples
Proper light is crucial for success.
" Eastern exposure is best. Avoid the
'Bloodgood'
afternoon sun from the west because
it will dry the plants out and is likely to
scorch the foliage, " he says. " Many
cultivars prefer high, tree-filtered shade
with four to six hours of morning light. "

For mature trees, use a slow-release
fertilizer, such as 10-4-6 or 16-4-8, and

hardiness zones 7 and 8, which encompass
most of Georgia. Prune in the winter
when the tree is dormant to manage its
shape or to remove dead limbs. Dwarf
cultivars can be planted in containers.
They will require more frequent watering
than they would if planted in the ground,
but be careful not to saturate the soil.
" Take the time to do your research,
then spend the money to purchase the
cultivar or cultivars that suit your landscape
and your tastes, " Gibbs says. " You
really only need two or three in your
landscape to enjoy the beauty of these
versatile trees. "
