The historic barn on the Bryant homestead is part of the
story and landscape of the Flat Rock
community.
Visitors will see the
memorabilia, death certificates,
photographs and furniture of the
people who contributed to the
community's rich history.
They can touch a football that
belonged to quarterback Warren
Moon-the only player inducted
into both the Pro Football Hall of
Fame and the Canadian Football
Hall of Fame-whose mother,
Agnes " Patsy " Moon, was a
student at Flat Rock Elementary School and the first
black employee of the Fox
Theatre in Atlanta.
" I think about the courage that T.A. was born
with-not that he mustered up but was born with-
to approach a white man in the Jim Crow South, "
Cosby says. " He purchased his freedom and that of a
whole lot of others so that they were indebted to no
one. It's that spirit you [see captured] at Flat Rock. "
Sharing the legacy
On the tour with Bryant-Hughes, visitors can
explore the homestead, the historic cemetery and
the site of the old African American Methodist
Church, which Bryant-Hughes calls the foundation
of the entire community.
" The desire I have is to carry forward the legacy
of my grandfather, who was a community provider

and a community and church
leader, " Bryant-Hughes says.
" He shared his time, his
property, his resources. He
even had a community
garden that included a
'widow's patch' that could
be harvested by those who
needed food. "
Bryant-Hughes hopes to one day see a community center on her
grandfather's former property, where people could gather for weddings,
family reunions and other events.
" To have ties to the community, to serve the community as my
grandfather did, to share his legacy-this is my passion, " she says. " When
I'm gone, I'd like for this experience to grow, for the homestead to be
the place where people can come and see how people lived during the
period of my grandfather [and to] get the experience of its history and
how he served the community. We want our children and our children's
children to carry the story forward. "
