eorgia's deep-water port in Savannah is a critical
gateway to global trade and is the nation's busiest and
fastest-growing seaport for U.S. goods.
Last year, after the completion of a decades-long project to
deepen the Savannah Harbor to accommodate loaded megaships
transiting the Savannah River, the port handled a record
number of shipping containers for exports and imports.
The economic benefits from that sea traffic flow to all
corners of the state and foster the development of every Georgia
industry, according to the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA). The
authority operates, develops and maintains port facilities,
including deep-water marine ports in Savannah and Brunswick
and inland ports where shipping containers can be received,
moved short distances and loaded onto trains heading to or
from the coast. These inland ports' infrastructure of railroad
terminals, barges and cargo beltways leading to Georgia's
highways and interstates help efficiently move international
cargo across the country and help Georgia's companies get their
products out to markets all over the world.
Georgia's robust ports system contributes $140 billion to
the state's economy-representing 12 percent of Georgia's total

sales revenue-according to the latest economic study by the
Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia's
(UGA) Terry College of Business in Athens.
The study, released last year, used data from fiscal year (FY)
2021 and found that the ports account for 11 percent of total
state employment, or one in nine jobs.
The GPA operations and private-sector and port-related
businesses now account for more than 561,000 full- and parttime
jobs in Georgia. In addition, the ports brought $33 billion
in income and $3.8 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia's
economy during FY 2021.
