Vision Month
he National Eye Institute (NEI),
nei.nih.gov, is urging Americans
to protect their vision by getting a
dilated eye exam and keeping their eyes
healthy, as part of Healthy Vision Month.
Dilated eye exams check for many
common eye problems, including
glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and agerelated
macular degeneration. Primary
care doctors can help assess how often
an eye exam is needed based on risk factors,
such as being overweight or diabetic
or having high blood pressure; having
a family history of eye disease; or being
African American, Hispanic or Native
American, because those ethnicities have
a higher risk of developing certain eye
diseases. The NEI recommends a dilated
eye exam every one to two years for
people older than 60; African Americans
older than 40; or those who have family
histories of glaucoma. Those at higher
risk may need an exam once a year.
The NEI also recommends eating
dark, leafy greens and fish that are high
in omega-3 fatty acids, being physically
active and quitting smoking to help lower
risks to eye health. Other suggestions
include wearing sunglasses while
outdoors; donning protective eyewear
for sports or home-improvement
projects; giving your eyes a rest while
using devices such as computers or
cellphones; and regularly disinfecting
contacts and washing hands before
putting in or taking out contact lenses to
help prevent eye infections.
