Music series honors Toccoa native
Every Saturday night in June, July and August, people bring
lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Toccoa for the longrunning
Ida Cox Music Series. Named for the Toccoa native and
renowned blues singer, who sang in the town's church choirs as
a youngster, the music series is the city's gift to the community.
" Many people know Ida Cox as 'the Uncrowned Queen of
the Blues' in the 1920s and 1930s, " says Connie Tabor, Toccoa city
planner. " With Bessie Smith and Gertrude 'Ma' Rainey, they are
considered the founders of women in blues.
" We host a baker's dozen concerts each summer, and
people love to come for the music and the chance to enjoy the
summer Saturday nights. They may pick up boxed meals from
downtown restaurants or bring their own food. Best of all,
it's free. "
Organizers aim for a variety of musical styles, including
jazz, blues, hits from the '80s and Americana, bringing back
favorites like Toccoa Jazz and Milkshake Mayfield to begin and
close the series, respectively.
Here's the lineup for June: June 3, Toccoa Jazz; June 10,
Roswell's Last Call Band with party music; June 17, The Original
Splitz Band from Athens, playing Motown, funk and R&B; and
Last Call Band from Roswell performs as part of the Ida Cox Music Series
on June 10.
June 24, The Rick Fowler Band from Athens, featuring blues
and rock.
