This gabled-ell farmhouse in Montgomery County is an example of
the type of farmhouse that's most commonly found in rural Georgia.
Brown has a particular fondness for photographing old tenant
houses like this one in Washington County.
Brown's photo of the interior of the Graco Barber Shop in Grady
County captures the trappings of a bygone era.
landowner, back in the 1940s, " the anonymous commenter told
Brown. " She and her eight brothers and sisters all lived in those
two rooms and worked in the fields in every season. They raised
cotton and tobacco at different times, and she said they often
worked from dawn till dark, whether in the fields or helping her
mother do laundry or cooking.
" She doesn't miss the hard work, but she has fond memories
of that place and how much love there was in her hardworking
family. She hasn't been back to Georgia for many years, and
when I discovered the photo on your website and shared it with
her, it brought tears to her eyes. She was grateful that someone
thought it was important enough to photograph. "
Eliciting this sort of feedback is part of Brown's mission.
" This kind of response from people of all backgrounds
really is what drives me to do the work I do, " Brown says. " They
often can't believe [the places are] still around. "
He's captured the beauty of an 1847 mansion in Walker
County's Chickamauga, a 1910 Craftsman bungalow in Houston
County and a wooden, gabled-ell farmhouse in Montgomery
County, its sagging foundation supported with stacks of blocks
and bricks. He's also documented the interior of a Grady County

barbershop-an evocative slice of Americana-with its high-rise
shoeshine station in the rear, its bottles of hair tonics and a row
of spinning barber chairs.
" The Sanitary Barber Shop was established by Ben Lundy
in the Cairoga Club Building in 1921, " Brown notes on Vanishing
Georgia. " At some point, it became the Graco Barber Shop.
According to the Grady County History Museum, the barbershop
was purchased in 1936 by Frank Massey and maintained
by him until his death in 1965. Winfred Robinson bought the
business and ran it until his retirement in 2010. "
From time to time, Brown drives by the places he's recorded
to see whether they are still standing and how they have aged.
He estimates that 30 percent of what he has photographed and
archived is gone.
" We take [these places] for granted, " he says. " We pass them
so often that we stop seeing them, but they are going quickly. "
