If you drive Georgia's back roads
Positive stories
I liked Amber Lanier Nagle's article, " Rome High
School football players rescue woman from car crash, "
because I don't see enough of positive reports about
guys like these being reported in the local news
media. [See Hometown Heroes, March 2023,
page 42; bit.ly/rome0323.]
I hope that you put more stories like these
in future issues.
-David Thomas, Harlem
Ready to see the state
We love Georgia Magazine! My husband and I
are new to the Upson County area, and we love reading about
all of the events and sites surrounding us! We plan to do a lot more local sightseeing
and traveling.
-Sharon Crawford Daws, via email
I love the magazine. I read it every month
and look forward to making note of cool places
to go and things to do in our state.
-Brydon Albers, Ludowici
We know that place!
I recognized the " Picture this? " place in
Georgia from the February 2023 issue of your
magazine. My family and I visited Providence
Canyon State Park, also known as the Little Grand
Canyon, in Lumpkin this past December. It was
amazing! Thanks for reminding me of our trip!
-Lilly Lestinsky, Beverly Hills, Fla.
I believe your picture in the February 2023
" Picture this? " contest is Providence Canyon
State Park in Lumpkin. The last time we visited
was March 20, 2021. I have attached a picture of
my husband, Eddie, that I took while there.
-Judy Rogers, Cairo
The February 2023 " Picture this? " place is
Providence Canyon State Park in Stewart
County. I really love it there, and the canyon is
so beautiful. I have included a photo of my grandkids
in front of the canyon.
-Carmen Guzman, Lumpkin

you're sure to see old barns, farmhouses,
tenant shacks and other buildings-
some still in use and some abandoned.
Photographer Brian Brown has made it
his mission to document these structures
on Vanishing Georgia, his online tribute
to endangered Southern architecture.
These buildings, largely constructed
by ordinary people using local materials,
reflect cultural traditions. Dubbed
" vernacular architecture, " they have as
much to tell us about Georgia's past as
does any antebellum mansion. Read
" Preserving vanishing Georgia, " starting
on page 16, to find out how Brown's
photographs are helping to keep our
state's architectural history from
disappearing forever.
Visitors can explore another type
of history at the Computer Museum of
America in Roswell. Real estate developer
and lifelong computer enthusiast
Lonnie Mimms has amassed 300,000
technological artifacts, ranging from a
Sumerian tablet dating back to 2000 B.C.
to modern-day devices and cellphones.
Even though only a fraction of his
collection is on display, the exhibits
engagingly showcase the evolution of
computers and their impact on our
lives. Turn to " Tech through the times, "
starting on page 25, to learn more about
the technology that ushered us into the
digital age.
While technology has been a boon to
society in many ways, excessive use can
have adverse effects on our health and
personal relationships. We're surrounded
by screens every day-on computers, TVs,
tablets, cellphones, even our watches-
and getting away from them can be hard,
especially for young people.
Planning outdoor activities can be a
great way to get the family disconnected
from screens and connected to the
natural environment. Read " Unplug the
family for old-fashioned good times, "
starting on page 22, to discover getaways
in Georgia that are devoid of digital
distractions.
Enjoy!

I
Rome High School football players
rescue woman from car crash
t was a warm, humid Friday morning in August, and the
roadways around Rome bustled with traffic.
Treyvon Adams was driving three of his friends-
Antwion Carey, Tyson Brown and Alto Moore-to school and
slowed his vehicle to survey the busy intersection in front of
Rome High School.
As he watched, a car suddenly pulled in front of a small silver
sedan, causing it to collide with a vehicle on the other side of the
divided highway. Bam! And then everything fell silent for a few
moments.
" I don't remember thinking about it or saying anything, "
Adams says. " All of us just jumped out of the car and started
running in that direction. "
" We could hear the woman [in the silver car] screaming in
pain, " Moore adds. " And we could see that her face was bloody. "
Cesar Parker and his mother were in the vehicle behind the
four young men and also witnessed the crash. Like the others,
Parker rushed to the vehicle to help. All five students are 17 years
old and members of the Rome High School football team.
Smoke billowed from the engine of the silver sedan, and fluid
spilled onto the pavement. The car's doors were jammed, and the
woman was trapped. Whether it was a surge of adrenaline or the
result of many hours of weight training and team activities, the
football players worked together and, with superhuman strength,
forced the doors open. They comforted the 50-year-old injured

woman and pulled her from the wreckage.
Parker and Adams then shifted their attention to the people
in the other vehicle involved in the accident.
" They were an elderly couple, and the airbag [had deployed
and] had hurt the woman, but they seemed OK, " Parker
remembers.
Paramedics arrived about six minutes after the collision
and began treating the driver of the silver car. The five young
heroes got back into their vehicles and continued on to school
as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
" We didn't want to be late for school that day, " Adams says.
Accounts of the young men's valor spread like wildfire
throughout the school, the community, the state and the nation.
All the attention and praise have genuinely surprised the teens.
" It all happened so fast, and we just trusted our gut and did
what was right. That's all, " Carey says. " It's the way we were
raised. "
In the face of danger, emergencies and crises, some people
remain bystanders, while others-like Adams, Carey, Brown,
Moore and Parker-choose to respond.
" We hope our story inspires others, " Brown says. " If
someone needs help, act, get involved and just do the right
thing! "
