Youth orchestras showcase Georgia's brilliant rising stars
N
othing stirs the human soul like music.
Georgia's youth orchestras give young
musicians the opportunity to hone their
talents and deepen their relationships with music.
Youth orchestras demand excellence and
dedication. A student usually starts out playing in
a school orchestra, in which he or she gains vital
experience with orchestral playing. The next step for
more advanced students is to join a youth orchestra,
which enables them to tackle difficult compositions
with equally skilled and motivated musicians.
" Georgia has an education system that is really
renowned nationally for producing students with
tremendous fundamental expressive skills. The state
has earned this reputation based upon generations
of really strong music education, " says Paul Bhasin,
director of orchestral studies at Emory University
in Atlanta; conductor of the Emory University
Symphony Orchestra and Emory Youth Symphony

be themselves, not have any distractions [and] not have anything else to think
about besides what their fingers and their hands are doing to create this art, " says

Orchestra in Clarkston. " A youth orchestra program can supplement
that experience by providing students with ... a very focused and rigorous
experience engaging with orchestral repertoire on a level that builds upon
and enriches their high school program experiences. "
Most youth orchestras are made up of young, dedicated musicians
in middle school and high school. Acceptance and placement usually are
based on auditions. Opportunities for acceptance also are open to students
who may not have had the advantage of playing in a school orchestra.
" A lot of home-schooled students that I have do either private lessons
or small ensembles within their church, " says Michael Giel, music director
at Dunwoody High School in Dunwoody and at LaGrange Symphony Youth
Orchestra in LaGrange. He also is the principal conductor for the Atlantabased
Capitol City Opera Company. " As they grow, then they get to our
youth orchestra. "
