The young adult program serves members ages 18 to 24,
who meet on Sunday evenings and often enjoy outings
together. The group recently received a grant from Fulton
County to fund " Atypical Atlanta, " which treated members to
Atlanta destinations such as the Georgia Aquarium, the College
Football Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Burroughs says Erin's Hope is working to extend programming
to adults in their early 30s.
e's Club is also open to community volunteers who wish
to support its programs.
Matthews is especially grateful when she sees teenage
book clubs, video game competitions, movie nights and
" hangout time. "
" There are no 'goals'-like parents asking me to make
sure their child does something or talks to a certain number of
people, " Matthews says. " They get that at school and at home.
We let them come into their own skin at their own pace. "
An expanding scope
Sam Seidel of Marietta joined e's Club in 2016 when he was
18 and made true friends for the first time, he says. He was a
regular attendee until the pandemic halted in-person events.
By the time in-person meetings resumed last year, he had
aged out of the teen program, but Matthews saw leadership
potential in Seidel and didn't want him to lose the connections
he had built.
" In 2023, I was hired for the young adult program, " Seidel
says. " Now I get to hang out outside of e's Club and see people
who otherwise would never have been my friends. "
volunteers who are not on the autism spectrum gathering
around video games or chatting with club members. It's a
powerful benefit for both groups of young people: Members
of e's Club make friends and may be emboldened to interact
with the volunteers when they see them at school or other
places, while the volunteers are able to see past stereotypes
or misconceptions.
" [Teens with autism] are just kids, " Matthews says. " They
just want to hang out with their friends. "

Young people interested in joining e's Club can complete a
virtual intake process or attend an in-person drop-in event to gain
membership. There is a nominal participation fee for events, and
scholarship applications are available.
