ulture feeding impacts bioprocess productivity,
product quality, as well as the bioengineer's
workload. Its optimization is therefore
a central part of upstream bioprocess development.
In this article we discuss how digital technologies can
expedite automated culture feeding, thereby improving
bioprocess efficiency.
The importance of culture feeding
Many bioprocesses aim at producing biomass or a
product of interest at a high volumetric productivity;
this means generating as much product from a given
culture volume as possible. High cell densities are
often a prerequisite to high productivity. Several
factors can limit culture growth, including the level of
dissolved oxygen, the formation of toxic byproducts,
and the availability of nutrients. In this article we
focus on the latter and discuss the importance of
culture feeding strategies to avoid nutrient shortage.
The difference between batch
and fed-batch cultivation
In batch fermentation, a bioreactor is inoculated
with cells or microorganisms to a fixed volume of
medium. With culture growth, the nutrients are gradually
consumed, and byproducts accumulate.
